Because of injuries on the main team, Edwards gave him a chance to play right away. He started 55 of the 72 games he played in his first season with the Timber Wolves. By the end of the season, he had made such an effect on the team that he was named runner-up for Rookie of the Year, made the NBA All-Rookie first team, and became the third youngest player in NBA history to score 40 or more points.
The Timber Wolves made the playoffs for the first time in four years and only the second time in 18 years in his second year. He scored 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists per game.
