In a recent development, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory, accusing the organization of breaching its founding agreement and engaging in unfair business practices.
The lawsuit, filed at the San Francisco Superior Court, alleges that OpenAI, which was initially founded with the mission to develop AI systems for public welfare, has deviated from its original purpose and has transformed into a profit-maximizing entity under Microsoft.

According to Musk’s claims, OpenAI has become a closed-source subsidiary of Microsoft, refining Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) to maximize profits for the tech giant, rather than for the benefit of humanity.
In response to these accusations, OpenAI has issued a statement, rejecting Musk’s claims of betrayal. The AI startup has revealed details of its interactions with Musk, shedding light on the disagreements that led to the current legal dispute.
OpenAI alleges that Musk had expressed a desire for the organization to transition to a for-profit structure, to merge it with Tesla or gain full control. However, the company asserts that it was against its mission for any individual to have absolute control over OpenAI.

Furthermore, OpenAI claims that Musk suggested attaching the organization with Tesla as a ‘cash cow’, but the negotiations regarding for-profit terms could not be reached due to fundamental differences in vision.
The startup also alleges that Musk withheld funding during discussions about transitioning to a for-profit entity, prompting investor Reid Hoffman to bridge the financial gap to cover salaries and operations.
Moreover, OpenAI has shared excerpts of an email from Musk, in which he purportedly stated that Tesla was the only path capable of competing with Google, albeit with slim chances.
The lawsuit filed by Elon Musk against OpenAI marks a significant escalation in the ongoing dispute between the tech mogul and the AI research organization. As the legal proceedings unfold, the tech industry watches closely, awaiting the resolution of this high-profile case.
