New York police officers at the funeral of slain NYPD detective Jonathan Diller

NEW YORK (SN) — On Saturday, 30 March 2024, Thousands of New York Police Department officers on foot and motorcycles escorted the remains of an officer killed in the line of duty across the city to a Long Island church for his funeral service.

Leading the path of Diller’s arrival at the church, the bagpipes and drums were played to the solemn cries of Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Massapequa Park, New York.

“The city mourns a cop. The tens of thousands of officers outside mourn a brother in arms. But for Stephanie and Ryan, they are mourning their everything,” said the Rev. Michael Duffy, addressing the surviving wife of Diller and the 1-year-old son while giving a homily he prepared for the mass service.

Diller, 31, was fatally shot during a traffic stop; he was the first New York City police officer killed in the line of duty in two years.

The services on Saturday followed two days of wakes this week that drew thousands of visitors, including former President Donald Trump, Governor Kathy Hochul, and Mayor Eric Adams, who also spoke at the funeral Saturday.

“He was never the one to sugarcoat anything, and I’m definitely not going to sugarcoat this either,” said Stephanie Diller. “This is devastating. It’s just a tragic, devastating loss.

Investigators today began recovering evidence from the cargo ship that hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, causing the bridge to collapse. Divers were meanwhile searching in twisted metal for several construction workers who plunged into the harbor and are feared dead.

Adams said at the funeral Saturday that even after he had been shot, Diller fought back and disarmed Rivera. “He ran towards danger, taking risks, making arrests and undoubtedly saving lives,” Adams said. Rivera is charged with first-degree murder, while the driver of the SUV faces weapons offenses and other crimes. The men were represented by lawyers who have not spoken for comment on the record.
