When people think of Cinco de Mayo, they often think of Mexico’s Independence Day. But in reality, the holiday celebrates Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla (Batalla de Puebla) and has become a time for Mexican Americans to honor their culture and history.
There are a lot of events going on in our area, like the yearly Cinco de Mayo parade in Southwest Detroit and We Are Culture Creators’ Fiesta Detroit. In Royal Oak, there is also lucha libre wrestling and a tequila festival. Here are five standouts that you can enjoy responsibly and politely.
59th Annual Fiesta and Parade for Cinco de Mayo
The Mexican Patriotic Committee of Metro Detroit is having its annual Cinco de Mayo party all weekend at the corner of West Vernor Highway and 21st Street. On Saturday and Sunday, the fiesta takes place with traditional music and cultural events. In the past, there have been food, vendors, and mariachi bands. The 3-mile parade on Sunday is the main event. It has great acts, beautifully decorated floats, and more. May 4 and 5. There is no fee to watch the show, but there may be other fees.
Lucha Boom
In honor of Cinco de Mayo, Sanctuary Fight Club and We Are Culture Creators are putting on an event with lucha libre wrestling, tacos, and other cultural fun. The event, which is part of Fiesta Detroit, will begin on May 3 at 7 p.m. $25 to $75.
Tequila Fest at Royal Oak
Enjoy Cinco de Mayo by learning about the agave-based Mexican drink at this year’s event. At the event, people will be able to try many different types of tequila, as well as tequila liqueurs, crèmes, mezcals, and more. They will also be able to enjoy handcrafted margaritas and other cocktails. You can also find food trucks, live music, games, and shops. May 4. $49.69.

Fiesta Detroit
Somos Culture Creators, a branch of the local group We Are Culture Creators that works with the Latino art community in Detroit, has Cinco de Mayo events every day from Friday until Sunday, the big day. This event will take place in seven busy areas in and around Mexicantown and Bagley Street. It will have 75 influencers and artists, live music on five stages, an artisan market with more than 100 vendors, wrestling, a beer garden, and a lot more. Pick days between May 3 and 5. The street fair is free, but the shows cost $15 to $20.
Stickers, painting, and mariachi
The Detroit Public Library wants kids and families to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by getting together and making art that celebrates the holiday with things like paint, stickers, and old things that have been used. May 4. There is no charge.
