A 27-year-old guy is being charged with killing a passenger in his car in a head-on crash early Sunday morning on Interstate 35 in southern Johnson County.
On Monday, Johnson County prosecutors charged Matthew Karabas, 27, with first-degree murder in the death of Eric Diaz, 22, of Melbourne, Florida, who was riding with him.
The criminal case describes a second set of possible charges. Karabas is accused of second-degree murder for killing Diaz and driving while drunk, which caused 29-year-old Samuel Garrido to get hurt. Garrido was operating the 2024 Freightliner semi-truck that Karabas collided with head-on.
Court records show that Karabas was trying to get away from police when the accident happened at 3:18 a.m. Karabas was driving southbound on I-35 near Edgerton Road when the accident happened.

Karabas was hurt badly and was taken to a nearby hospital to get help. It wasn’t thought that Garrido’s injuries would be life-threatening.
Karabas was asked to be held on a $2 million bond by the prosecutors. He met with a judge for the first time through video chat on Monday afternoon.
