The person who died Thursday morning while trying to stop a carjacking in Lumberton has been named by the police.
Police in Lumberton say that 38-year-old Jonathan Adam Lecompte from Fayetteville, North Carolina, was killed in the event.
Lumberton police said that Ricky Alex Driggers, who is 28 years old, stole a car and then hit Lecompte on purpose. Lecompte was one of several good people who tried to help.

Police have charged Driggers with murder in the first degree, two counts of attempted common law robbery, theft from a motor vehicle, and felony fleeing to escape. The Robeson County Detention Center is holding him without bond.
The trouble started in the 4100 block of W. 5th Street around 10:30 a.m. Police say that on their way to a report of a carjacking, they were told that the suspect had been involved in a hit-and-run in the parking lot of Go Gas at 2605 W. 5th Street and was now trying to steal another car on W. 5th Street in front of a McDonald’s.

A police news statement said, “Good Samaritans stepped in to stop the carjacking, but the suspect was then able to steal the vehicle of one of the good Samaritans.” “While stealing the car, the suspect is said to have hit one of the good Samaritans on purpose with the stolen car.”
Police say Lecompte was hit and declared dead at a nearby hospital.
When police arrived, they saw Driggers driving off in the stolen car and followed him until he crashed on Selma Road near Highway 41.
