Jason Carter, the grandson of Jimmy Carter, recently provided an additional update on the health of the 99-year-old 39th president.
Jason Carter informed Southern Living on June 5 that Jimmy Carter, who is approaching his 16th month in hospice, is “experiencing the world as best he can as he continues through this process.”
It has been a challenge to acclimate to life without his wife, Rosalynn Carter.
“Following 77 years of matrimony…” Jason Carter stated, “I simply believe that none of us truly comprehends the circumstances he is currently facing.” “We must accept the reality that there are aspects of the spirit that are beyond comprehension.”
Jason Carter asserts that there has been “really no change” in the former president’s health. He claims that Jimmy Carter was not conscious daily of receiving the family members who frequently visited him.
At the Carter Center in Atlanta on May 14, Jason Carter stated that the former president’s tenure is “coming to a close,” but he is still present, as reported by NBC News. The forum was held in commemoration of Rosalynn Carter.
Since February 2023, the former president has been residing in hospice at his residence in Plains, Georgia. Rosalynn Carter, his wife, underwent hospice care a few days before her passing on November 19, 2023. Additionally, she was diagnosed with dementia earlier that year.
Jimmy Carter attended Rosalynn Carter’s funeral on November 28, 2023, and the 99-year-old was moved to abandon hospice care to honor his late wife’s life.
Jimmy Carter was photographed in a wheelchair with a blanket covering his thighs upon his arrival at the ceremony. It bore a stitched image of the couple and the inscription “The Carters.”
One of the Carters’ sons, James Earl “Chip” Carter III, 73, was captured in an intimate moment kissing his ailing father on the head. The New York Times reported that Jimmy Carter’s family was apprehensive about his decision to travel over 150 miles to attend the services.
Since his admission to palliative care, Jimmy Carter has been scarcely visible.
His most recent public appearance occurred approximately one week before his 99th birthday. He and Rosalynn Carter both attended the Plains Peanut Festival. A video of the former president and first lady riding in a black SUV through the annual festival in his hometown was reposted by the Carter Center.
“A beautiful day for President and Mrs. Carter to enjoy a ride through the Plains Peanut Festival!” The center wrote on X, which was previously known as Twitter, “And just a week before he turns 99.”
Plains, Georgia, the hometown of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, and the location of Jimmy Carter’s palliative care, has always held a special place in the hearts of the former president and his family.
It is the location where arrangements to commemorate and celebrate Jimmy Carter’s life are currently underway. Southern Living reports that a state funeral will be held in Washington D.C., followed by a service in Plains.
The residence they occupied in 1961 will be donated to the National Park Service. Jason Carter describes the experience as “such an American story… to visit Plains and see the house that my grandparents constructed, lived in for their entire lives, and returned to after their presidency.”
The first president to survive to the age of 95 or older and the only one to witness the 40th anniversary of his inauguration is the former peanut farmer. He has been the subject of numerous media reports regarding his health in recent years, and his family has provided updates regarding his hospice care.
Jimmy Carter’s health history is summarized below.
Jimmy Carter’s current state of health
Jimmy Carter is currently receiving hospice care at his residence. He used to spend his days with his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who was diagnosed with dementia months before her passing.
In September, Jason Carter, the chairman of the Carter Center’s Board of Trustees, discussed the conclusion of his grandparents’ time together.
“He has been in hospice for several months, but they are content,” he stated to USA Today at the time. “They are in conjunction.” They are currently at their residence. They are in love, and I think that no one deserves anything more. I mean, it’s an ideal situation for this stage of their lives.”
Jason Carter further stated that Jimmy Carter encounters “extremely substantial physical obstacles” and devotes his time to family visits and baseball.
Josh Carter, one of the 11 surviving grandchildren of the former president, stated to People in August that his grandfather is currently in the “final chapter” of his life, but that “he’s still fully Jimmy Carter.”
Josh Carter stated that the former president “fully comprehends (the numerous well wishes he has received) and has experienced the love,” despite his fatigue.
Josh Carter stated that his grandparents’ residence is perpetually occupied by somebody, typically one of their four children: Amy Carter, 56, John William “Jack” Carter, 76, James Earl “Chip” Carter III, 73, and Donnel Jeffrey “Jeff” Carter, 71. Josh Carter stated that caregivers and family members have been the sole visitors to the residence in recent times.
His grandmother was “still able to form new memories” during her final months, he also stated at the time.
Jimmy Carter declared in February 2023 that he would cease medical intervention and would exclusively receive palliative care through his foundation, the Carter Center. The information was disclosed after his recovery from a series of hospitalizations.
Among other illnesses, Jimmy Carter has survived numerous falls and cancer over the past several years.
Jimmy Carter was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in 2015 and underwent treatment.
Jimmy Carter underwent surgery in August 2015 to remove a tiny mass from his liver. The Carter Center referred to the procedure as “elective” and predicted that he would make a complete recovery at the time.
Jimmy Carter’s liver mass was diagnosed as metastatic melanoma shortly thereafter. In August 2015, it was disclosed that the cancer had metastasized to his brain, necessitating radiation therapy.
However, it appeared that he was cancer-free by December 2015. An MRI scan of Jimmy Carter’s brain at that time did not reveal “any signs of the original cancer spots nor any new ones,” according to a Carter Center statement. Following this, he continued to undergo immunotherapy treatments.
Jimmy Carter has a family history of malignancy. Pancreatic cancer claimed the lives of his father, sibling, and both of his sisters. According to NBC News, his mother was also diagnosed with the illness.
Jimmy Carter contemplated his cancer threat and the potential for his death during a 2019 church service, several years after the initial incident. He stated that he was “completely and absolutely at peace with death.”
“I naturally assumed that I would die very quickly,” he stated. “I’m sure I prayed about it.” I did not request that God grant me life; rather, I requested that He grant me a proper perspective on mortality. I discovered that I was entirely at ease with the prospect of death.
Jimmy Carter had several falls in 2019 and had to have surgery.
Carter broke his hip when he tripped at home in Georgia in May 2019. Not long after that, he had surgery.
The accident happened as he was getting ready to go turkey shooting. At the time, the Carter Center talked to NBC News and said that he was in a good mood.
“This week is the last week of turkey season, and President Carter said that’s his main worry,” the statement said. “He hopes that the State of Georgia will let him carry over the limited amount to the following year.”
Jimmy Carter hurt his face 14 times when he fell again in October 2019. He still went to Nashville to talk at a Habitat for Humanity event, even though he was hurt and had a black eye.
He told the crowd, “I fell and hit my forehead on a sharp edge. I had to go to the hospital.” “But I had a No. 1 priority, and that was to come to Nashville and build houses.”In the same month, Jimmy Carter broke his hip in another fall at home. This is what the Carter Center said at the time: “He has been admitted to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center to be watched and treated for a minor pelvic fracture.” In a good mood, he’s looking forward to getting better at home.
Jimmy Carter was in the hospital for two weeks in November 2019 while he healed from surgery to ease pressure on his brain that was caused by bleeding from several falls. While the surgery was going on, the Carter Center said there were “no complications.”

The statement said, “After a series of short hospital stays, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter today chose to spend his last days at home with his family and get hospice care instead of more medical care.” “Both his family and his medical team are behind him 100%.” Please give the Carter family respect during this time. They are thankful that many of his fans are thinking about them.
