Police officers all over the United States and many communities in Massachusetts loved Peter L. Carnes. He died peacefully on September 4, 2024, after a brave five-year fight with cancer. Seventy-one.
Wenham is where Peter was born and raised. He then lived in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, for the last twenty years of his life. His beloved wife of almost 50 years, Karen, their son Brendan, their daughter-in-law Weronika, and his dear granddaughter Romy will miss him.

As an example of what a police officer should be, Peter’s life was devoted to serving and protecting his neighborhood. His 47-year career as a police officer was marked by great leadership and a strong dedication to mentoring. He began his career in Wenham in 1971 and worked his way up until he was Chief of the Wenham Police Department in 1984.
From 1995 until he retired in 2008, he worked as Chief of the Yarmouth Police Department. Peter loved being a police officer so much that he worked as Chief of Police and Director of Campus Safety at Stonehill College after he retired. He also ran the Cape Cod Regional Municipal Police Academy as the Director of the Police Academy.
As a police officer, Peter was involved with the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, the Rotary Club International, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Peter will be remembered for more than just his many work achievements. People will also remember him for being kind, funny, and caring. People who knew him called him a friend and looked up to him as a police officer. Many people will miss Peter, but his memory will live on through the people whose lives he touched in the places he served.
On September 11, 2024, from 4 to 8 p.m., people can visit the Hallett Funeral Home at 273 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, Massachusetts. The service will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at the First Lutheran Church of Cape Cod, 1663 Main Street Route 6A, West Barnstable, Massachusetts. Another time will be set for the burial in Wenham, Massachusetts.
