Ben Shelton’s year has been great. In January, he made it to the semifinals of the Australian Open. He was born with good tennis skills: Bryan, his dad, and Lisa Witsken Shelton, his mom, both played tennis. “We kid around, like which genes is Ben playing with, the Shelton genes or the Witsken genes?” The New York Times talked to Bryan Shelton. “He’s got some good blood running through him, that’s for sure.”

Bryan was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama. He is 57 years old. He played tennis in high school and then for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. As a college player, he won many awards. After graduating in 1989, he played officially and got as high as number 55 in his career. He stopped playing tennis in 1997 and became a tennis teacher.
He went back to Georgia Tech and coached the Yellow Jackets women’s team from 1999 to 2012. After that, he coached the University of Florida men’s team from 2012 to 2023. He was the first coach in Division I NCAA history to win both a women’s and a men’s national title. Ben played tennis for the Florida Gators before he turned pro. His dad taught him. Bryan quit in June so that he could coach his son Ben full-time. When his dad quit coaching college football.

This isn’t a career that’s defined by championships and accolades, but by the people impacted and lives changed. You showed up to work every day and gave a perfect effort. You did things with character and humility no matter the situation. You’ve kept your faith wherever your life has taken you, and always put your family first. There isn’t a better role model for young men trying to find their way in life. The Gator Nation may have suffered a blow with this one, but we always bounce back. 🧡💙 That being said, the dream team is back together baby‼️ Can’t wait to have you out on tour with me, and see what we can accomplish together 🤞🏽🐐”

The former Lisa Witsken grew up in Carmel, Indiana. She is one of eight children. She played tennis too, but not as well as Bryan.
