Team USA swimmer Lilly King made it to her second event at the Paris Olympics on Thursday and also brought home another gold medal.
King’s longtime boyfriend, James Wells, greeted her after she came in second place in the 200-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Indianapolis. He told her it had been an honor to be her lover for the past four years. After that, he gave her a ring.
She said, “Yes, yes, yes,” still wet from her race.
“Oh, it fits just right,” she said as she looked at the ring.
Wells, who also used to swim on the team at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, said it was a good time to ask King to marry him.
Wells told the crowd, “It means so much to her to be here in front of this crowd.” “That’s the perfect opportunity.”
The happy couple talked about the moment on NBC’s “Today” show on Friday morning.
“To be honest, I had no idea why he was on deck. I asked her, “Why are you wearing your nice clothes? What’s going on?” “Oh, I see what’s going on now,” I thought.
In her words, she was ready for a possible proposal after the Paris Games, when they planned to “frolic around Europe.” But “last night I wasn’t expecting it at all,” she said.

Wells told her that he had thought about proposing while they were traveling in Europe this summer, but he decided that this was the best time to do it with her closest friends and family.
